Himachal Pradesh sits along the western Himalaya, a state of deodar forests, apple orchards, river valleys and snow-capped ridges. Shimla, the former summer capital, keeps its colonial character along the Ridge and Mall Road, while nearby Kufri opens onto wide meadows and mountain views.

Further north, Manali sits on the Beas river with temples, hot springs and monasteries within easy reach, and Solang Valley and the Atal Tunnel just beyond.
